Este conjunto de siete bols tiene su origen en la antigua India, donde representaban las siete ofrendas con las que se recibía a los huéspedes en el hogar: agua para beber, agua para bañarse, flores, incienso, luz, agua perfumada y comida. Con el tiempo, esta práctica fue adoptada por el budismo tibetano como una forma de ofrenda a los Budas y Bodhisattvas. Más que un gesto material, es un entrenamiento del corazón: la práctica del dar desinteresado, aun sabiendo que los Budas no necesitan nada.
